Destiny, IONA's most exuberant work, speaks of the maternal strengths of the Earth and its forces of dynamic change. The evening-length production draws content and imagery from a magical “Garden of Eternal Truths” celebrating Eastern and Western religions, gods, goddesses, healing, and peace. In an all encompassing work, Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty merges dance with video, spoken word, and captivating musical scores to reveal the creative structures that define our spiritual beliefs and shape the destiny of humanity.
Originally premiered in 2002, with rehearsals starting the week of 9/11, the show’s focus on non-violent agrarian cultures versus warring patriarchal systems that seek to control nature, is still quite topical today. This year's production features nearly the entire female cast from the original production, IONA veteran Sami L. A. Akuna, and several new and wonderful dancers.
